Looking at you, sailor Moon.
gender is a construct confirmed
don’t give them ideas 😩
but for real, that’s more-or-less already happening for some applications, which ship inside their own docker container, which is practically a mini-operating-system.
explanation? what is a prune?
I don’t see it that way. You can compare it to movies.
Low storage space, cartoon-ish games are comparable to animated movies and japanese anime. While successful, not everybody watches them. There are people who prefer live action movies, which have photo-realistic high-fidelity graphics (after all, they are photos).
Especially that every desktop app re-packages a whole web browser is infuriating me, as it could easily be avoided. The operating system should just provide a web browser library, that can be dynamically linked by each application. It’s such an easy solution but it isn’t used :(
I want to comment that “duplicate textures” isn’t typically wastes a lot of space. It’s one thing, but not typically the biggest thing.
The biggest thing is really unnecessarily high-definition textures, as you already said. If you have 4K textures for everything, that means you roughly use 5 MB per asset, even when using compression. If you have 2000 of these assets in your game, you immediately need 10 GB or storage space, and RAM when they are loaded into memory, and that’s what makes the game so heavy.
Just to make a counter-example, Luanti, which is like open-source Minecraft, uses 64x64 pixel assets at the most, where each asset consumes less than 1 KB of storage space if compressed, and that’s why even using a thousand assets in the game or more, the total game size is less than 30 MB. And that literally contains the whole game, including all assets and logic, which is just as complex as proprietary Minecraft.
I have the suspicion it’s not even about shareholder profits, it’s use dumb/useless metrics of success.
It’s the equivalent of measuring a programmer’s productive output in number of lines of code written. It leads to code like this:
Something similar happens with storage space: It is wasted unnecessarily because media designers are paid for “high definition” assets.
I really like efficient code, and that includes memory and storage-efficiency.
Luanti, where i run a server rn, uses less than 1 GB of storage space for a huge world, and i think the whole program code for all of mineclonia+the core luanti engine only uses sth like 30 MB. it’s really storage-efficient.
The article claims there is a correlation between gender gap and high-pitched voices, but it does not imply causation.
Also it’s simply not true. There’s lots of countries where gender inequality is significantly higher than in Japan (look at any african country basically, or Muslim countries), yet women there don’t speak with such a high-pitched voice, IMO.
Apart from that, the article gives me serious “beauty is oppression, and flirting is rape” vibes. Like the kind of messaging that is typically provided by nowadays “feminist” outlets who do in fact not focus on the social and socio-economic goal of improving the position of women in society as we/they are (fair-ness or true equality), but instead tries to focus on same-ness and abandoning that women dress pretty because oh no, she does that because she’s pressured by men in a patriarchic society to do so.
i’m not particular what you would call a normal guy and i have a lot of edgy views, but my take on this is simply that the main and by far number one reason why you’re not supposed to talk to women nowadays is because social media has instilled an outright fear of men in women.
you see, women are naturally very intelligent and pick up signals, even small ones, fast. if they see a hundred social media posts a day, and even one of them says something like “men are bad, keep away from them”, they will take the warning very seriously, even though there might be not much of a good reasoning behind it. maybe whoever wrote that social media post was only a crazy christian and was saying it because she was worried about staying “pure”. there are unfortunately christian people out there who think that “morale” and stuff like “staying pure [from men flirting with women]” are more important than understanding the social needs of the people. such is religion. over the internet it spreads like crazy. that’s why the women are all afraid of men. to which i respond with this meme:
(which means as much as: the fear is artificial and instilled; look at the actual predators. it is the rich)
My advice for you is: stay careful, as there are crazy “feminists” out there, who are only looking for a “catch”. For example, they want to test their “critique” on someone, and try to hurt you simply because they’re looking for a fight. but also, you must understand that only your heart will carry you forward, so you must listen to it. it is a difficult path to walk, but maybe you can try it.
unhealthy; i recommend therapist
i found the german term “vereinzelung” for this
vereinzelung führt zu vereinsamung
es gibt einen verlust an sozialem zusammenhalt.
cops (in the us especially) are for keeping the people in line and working hard, sothat they don’t overthrow the government and implement socialism
People who have a problem with trans people are being unreasonable. Unfortunately, a large part of our (mainstream) culture is completely unreasonable. So it’s really difficult to get through to people to tell them that trans people are really just people and should be treated as such. I guess it will take a lot of effort to really get this point across.
I suspect it might take a long time to solve this issue, but it will be solved eventually.
very interesting topic.
i agree that knowledge is like a virus. it consists mostly of information, and requires a host to be spread.
apart from that, knowledge is typically considered a good thing, no?
at least in our current, modern understanding.
that would be if we were in the struggle voluntarily. most are not, though
I think i’m not really non-straight, i just hate the toxic masculinity that is nowadays sold as “normal straight”. I guess me and a lot of people want to distance ourselves from that, hence the “queer” association.
