gestures broadly at everything.
I can barely take care of my self! Everything’s fucked! Don’t expect me to parent when I can’t even adult.
Man that’s crazy, people who got massive financial burdens just for going to school and have to suffer historically high housing prices alongside historically high interest rates don’t have the capacity for another massive financial burden, what ever could be causing this.
Watching other people’s kids made me realize I;m not up for that as a full time deal.
Sometimes I wonder how many parents of bad kids once looked at other bad kids and thought ‘theres no way my kid would ever come out like that’ because my guess is a looooot.
Lack of money.
We can’t even afford to take care of ourselves and we’re going through increasingly volatile climate change so we don’t want to bring children into the world so they have to suffer through it?
They have dogs instead
Have you seen the vet bills lately?
Won’t someone think of the unborn labor force that’ll be forced to provide uncompensated infinite growth‽
Civilization creeping in? Less tribalists? That sounds too optimistic. I’ll go with global regression to the mean.
Two factors that are seldom mentioned:
-
Modern people make worse parents in many respects. They might be more caring, when they actually have children, but they have less time for children, and are more distracted by other aspects of life. And overall, the general perception is that their commitment to family is much looser than in times past.
-
Standards are simply much higher than they used to be. People don’t want to have children with whomever, and they want their children to be successful compared to their peers and that’s not easy to achieve and failing that, they’d rather not have any at all.

Can you elaborate?
Doubtful.
They don’t understand that when given the choice and enough Healthcare to make sure their babies live, women as a whole actually make some pretty sensible and even economically responsible choices about when to reproduce.
I vaguely remember a vlogbrothers thing where John went to see a new L&D facility in a developing area and one of the ways they knew the area was healing was that the mothers started naming their babies when they were born when they normally would have waited a year or two to see if it lived before getting too attached. I can only imagine what a difference that makes on a child’s health and development; one of the things they tell nurses to specifically check for at every well-baby appointment is that the mother (or other primary caregiver) is responding appropriately to the child’s distress by attempting to comfort it as opposed to becoming angry / aggressive or ignoring / being emotionally detached from the child.
In a lot of places in the world (and usually some of the better ones where people live longer, happier lives, being so detached from your infant that you won’t even name them would probably be considered a sign of post-partum depression.
That’s why in L&D and pediatrics classes they teach you that “If mom (/the primary caregiver) isn’t safe, baby isn’t safe.” You HAVE to care for the caregiver if you truly value the safety and health of children.
Man, feminism has really gone too far, eh?
