One of the problems with the fediverse is that each server keeps its own copy of the content. It is definitely a worry that bad actors push content to federated servers to get them taken down due to the content they now are storing.

I think that’s the nicest way someone has ever said “touch grass” lol. I will agree though, losing access to Reddit made me realize how much mindless scrolling I would do on there. It’s difficult to see all of our comfy corners of the web crumble around us and not know what to do about it
I’ve tried Voyager and Memmy… I also know there are like a dozen others. My point still stands, we have too many devs spread out trying to make their own app/UI instead of us coming together to make one or two really good ones
I do too, ever since losing Apollo I’ve struggled to find something to fill that void. Ive tried various social media sites over the last couple of months but nothing has really stuck. Honestly not sure what to do or try at this point
Sounds like we should change the definition of active
So…where are those 70k active users? The posts I’ve been seeing definitely don’t have that sort of interaction.
I notice myself checking it less and less due to the post sorting algorithm being infuriating. E.g. I’m sorting by “Top 6 Hours” and this post from 7 months ago is in my feed
Edit: and since I’ve now commented on this post, it’ll likely bubble into other people’s feeds and they’ll be just as confused as I was
Hot take but all of the Lemmy/kbin apps. Instead of focusing dev time and resources on one or two open source apps we instead have a dozen half-baked pre-alpha apps. Lately it seems like I can’t go a day without seeing a post for a new Lemmy UI.
Seeing how we’ve known about it for decades and this is the amount of progress we’ve made towards slowing/fixing it… idk maybe I’m just being cynical, then again Covid really showed us just how much the general public doesn’t care about their well-being and other’s wellbeing
Machine learning be like: as an AI language model I can’t…
I went with .boo for mine due to cost and the fact that I’ve never seen it as a TLD before. There are a lot of interesting new ones out there now, might as well use this opportunity to try it out. (Also as an instance admin I’m not trying to make any money off of running an instance so keeping costs as low as possible is ideal)
Or create more comment and repost bots to dilute the content even further, sure initially it’ll look like increased real engagement but it would drive more power users and content creators away
I’ve had a couple pieces of software revoke my lifetime licenses when they switched to fully subscription (even though they swore lifetime license holders would be grandfathered). I get needing to make money to pay your software engineers to keep pushing out updates but man I hate this subscription hell we live in now
That’s just how it goes now it seems, we just have to go with the lesser of the evils for everything. Sure there is FOSS for some stuff but even then FOSS has its fair share of issues
Ultimately does it matter? They can say they do or don’t track you and they can say your data and privacy is safe but you never have a guarantee. It’s no different from when companies promise us xyz but then in the background they’ve been doing shady shit. My best suggestion is to try to make the best educated choice and to accept you made the best choice you could with the information you had at the time.
Never put anything on the internet you don’t want out there forever, even if you were able to delete your comments from your instance and the federated instances there are most certainly people from /r/datahoarders making archives of posts and comments in the fediverse
Oof best of luck to you guys on .ml instances, might be worth looking at buying a domain as a backup to migrate to. Don’t wanna be caught off guard like this especially if they are trying to recoup all their urls. I went with a .boo domain to be unique for my instance but there are loads of TLDs out there
Web 3.0 - users, kindly go fuck yourselves p.s. pay us subscription money and view lots of ads
as if the real working class (employees of supermarkets, fast food chains, gas stations, etc)
White collar and blue collar workers are also part of the real working class. The bottom like 95% of earners are. We need to stop labeling ourselves as different groups and start working together. Doesn’t matter the type of job you have, more than likely you are being severely underpaid and under appreciated.
