Ah good. I didn’t realize it was two winters. So hopefully next year we’ll see more lightning bugs.
When I was growing up I remember seeing lightning bugs everywhere during the summer. As an adult, living less than 100 miles south of that, I see far fewer of them. It’s really disturbing. And, hey, it’s good for me because I have to do less yard work.
I left the leaves on our lawn last winter, and this year I saw even fewer lightning bugs. It might be kind of pointless for me to do that, because our yard backs up to a huge ravine that is completely unkept - leaves, trees, branches, etc., all fall there and are left there. So it might be like adding a few square feet to an already large area.
But …the birds. Huge flocks of black birds sometimes come by; there will sometimes be thousands of them. If I’m outside when they show up, it’s a cacophony of chirping, then when they take off you can hear the whoosh from all of them. It’s such a great sight. But… they’re digging under the leaves, so I wonder if they were getting the insects I was trying to help. :(
The plugin works fine, but it can’t call the separate program if you have that installed.
Because I wanted it to integrate with 1password full client.
Every time this is asked, I post the same comment. I used Kubuntu for years and liked it, but more recently they started doing things that annoyed me. The biggest was related to snaps and Firefox. Now, sandboxing a browser is probably a great idea, but I wanted to use the regular deb install, so I followed the directions to disable the snap install and used the deb. However, Ubuntu overrode that decision several times - I’d start browsing, then realize I was using a snap AGAIN. Happened a few times over a couple years. If it happened once, eh, maybe an error, but it happened 3 or 4 times. I came to the conclusion I wasn’t in control of my system, Ubuntu was.
I switched to Debian and am happy with my choice.

Same here. What especially irritated me was that even though I installed the .deb firefox and followed the directions to disable snap firefox, occasionally Ubuntu went ahead and reinstalled snap firefox for me.
Absolutely agreed. Unlike reddit, there’s nothing between “private” and “everyone”. Reddit had a feature that subs could avoid the front page no matter how popular a post got, but Lemmy doesn’t have that, so every post shows up on everyone’s all.
Why do people think a dozen eggs costs $12?
A quick search turned up this 18 count of eggs for $9 at our local chain. And that was just the first result I found that had the price on the page (you have to click a button to see it, unfortunately, but it is there).

On January 6, yes, but they don’t stop working. The shutdown only affects the rank and file government employees that do things like run the government agencies, air traffic control*, Smithsonians, etc.
*Air traffic controllers would be considered an essential function, so they would actually get the joy of continuing to work without pay, until a budget is passed, then they would get back pay. (There’s also a possibility of some agencies having money, for various reasons, to continue to pay essential employees.)
The elections are run by the states, not the federal government. Congress keeps working during a shutdown. I can’t see how it would hinder the election.
It would have unpredictable effects on the election though, so I can’t imagine they really want to risk it.
Yeah. I grew up in the days of serial ports and parallel ports, and USB in general is so much better for most purposes. (I recall plugging my first mouse into the serial port…but wait! Where will my Hayes Smartmodem modem plug into then? Also, don’t plug and unplug things from the serial port while the computer is running.)
And USB-C is even better. My tablet needs a charge? Well my laptop charger is right here… My phone is low and needs a quick charge? Well my USB-C tablet charger will give it a decent boost very quickly. No worries about getting it plugged in the wrong way, either.
I have a docking station for my work laptop, so when I had to replace my personal laptop, a laptop that supported USB-C power delivery was mandatory. I don’t use it with the docking station very often, but knowing I can without an issue is great. My wife also has a Macbook that works on the docking station, too, in case she ever wants to use my dual monitor setup. All three laptops, from three different brands, are just plug in and go.
Thanks for rescuing her. We already have 3 cats and a dog, but if I was on a situation like you were, I might have to adopt a fourth. We absolutely don’t need a fourth cat, but I can’t see one abandoned like that.
We have a law in this county that we’d have to turn them into the shelter, but then we’d get first dibs at adopting. I might do a “we’ll give her a good home if no one else steps up in a week” sort of thing.
I gave up running an email server long ago - I thought it was basically impossible because too many spammers were doing it for nefarious purposes.
I have accounts at two credit unions. One I love, one is okay.
The first one has excellent customer service and was doing online banking before most banks even thought it existed - they had software you’d use to dial into their system with your modem. Obviously that has gone by the wayside but they have an excellent, full featured site. Rates are generally competitive. (Unfortunately I live in a different state than they are based in, so I can’t get my mortgage through them any more - they used to do it, but stopped offering mortgages in my state years ago.) They have nice touches, like if you withdraw cash from an ATM that isn’t theirs, they’ll refund the ATM fees you were probably charged.
The other credit union is fine. No major complaints really, but after the experience with the first one, the second one just doesn’t compare. Their website is functional and covers all the normal pieces of online banking, but doesn’t have nearly the features the other one does. I probably wouldn’t know what’s missing if I hadn’t used the first one.
We also have a regular bank. No major complaints with them either, but it’s not one of the biggies like Chase. One of the few remaining regional bank chains.
Marylanders worship their flag too, but as far as I’m aware, there’s no pledge of Maryland.
Yeah, if nothing else, standing up after sitting for so long is a good idea, even if you don’t sing or whatever.
And I say this as someone that dislikes baseball, and only occasionally goes to games because my wife likes them.
Looks like I’m on 1password 8 in Linux. For whatever reason, I just prefer the app instead of having the browser pop open 1password.com to edit records. I don’t know why, it just bugs me. I know part of it is that I want to use the native app to show support for it.
