1·17 天前It’s astroturing at its finest. What happens when the corporation that runs the station on the moon no longer wants to send that energy down to Earth? Furthermore, what happens when the colony on the moon that operates the station and/or facility rebels and becomes a new nation?
I’ve had a hunch for some time that Musk ‘turned evil,’ would be one of the first people to capitalize on his popularity, wealth, and opportunity to form his own mega corp nation on Mars. This seems like a great opportunity to put that in motion. Plus, if he and other billionaires decided to fund this tech and patent it, they would for sure use it against us in any way they could. Gatekeeping humanities progress is at stake if any of this comes true.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do these look like fake cigarettes or used tampons?English
5·17 天前They look like cigarettes to me.
My reasoning was, it seemed like one that wouldn’t die off in a year or less. Making it less of a hassle down the road when I need to start another account, add all or really all of the communities to my subs, and possibly having to transfer moderation to the new account.
In this day in age, and if you’re an average user, I’d be surprised if you didn’t max out more often with 8 gigs of ram, compared to those with 16 gigs of ram. That’s not to say it can’t be done.
I’m running 32 gigs right now. I’m currently using 9.8 gigs. I have 2 or of 3 Edge browsers in use, 5 tabs in total. 2 Youtube videos are paused, and the rest are low end resource tabs. Steam on standby, Discord open, and Spotify open and ready. Closing Steam dropped it down to 9.1 gigs of ram in use.
I try to ask myself, “What else would I be doing if not this?” More often than not, it’s just ‘wasting time’ instead of creating something, connecting with someone new, passing on or absorbing knowledge from others.
I would suggest making sure your own expectations are in check before you start in. Example: ‘I have a desire to share and discuss topics of my interests, but it’s just going to be for a hobby. Not for making a side income or the like.’ This way, it’s clear to yourself, and there doesn’t have to be regret, disappointment, etc., later on.
So what’s your goal or intention for starting a “Linux, software, privacy, etc. guides” blog?
HOLY MOLEY!! Look, I’m not you… But I am you in some ways. (348 games and I’ve probably only played 100 or so more than 5 hours, and the rest have less time or no time on them.) Make sure you remove your card info from Steam, so it’s one step you have to do if you were to be tempted to buy another game, to ‘collect dust.’
Stay strong.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What have you looked up on Wikipedia recently?English
5·1 个月前Because yesterday was the fifth of November, I looked up Wikipedia pages about the story and person(s) that inspired the movie, V for Vendetta
The Wiki article about the Gunpowder Plot in particular was most interesting.
That show is totally worth watching all the way through IMO. I liked season 1, but season 2 is probably my favorite in terms of story. Keep at it. =)
You can tend to find season recap videos for TV shows on Youtube. It’s been really useful for me, when I want to see the next season that came out but don’t really recall much of what happened since I last watched it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You form a new international holiday. What is it, how do we celebrate it, and how does it affect the world?English
1·1 个月前Sure, this has a chance of eliminating a billionaire, but I can think of two critical errors here.

What’s stopping them from just visiting/moving to an island for a weekend, month, year, or more, to prevent them from being killed?
-
Just because someone is dead doesn’t mean that their wealth goes away or reverts to the general populous. I’m not up on how many kids Elon Musk has nowadays (nor do I care to learn about it), but he has over 10 kids, last I checked. And because it’s not public record or hasn’t been leaked, we don’t know if any of them will inherit any of it. But chances are, they do. This then becomes something like a monarchical power problem. (I also don’t recall what it’s called, but there is a thought experiment where you try to determine if killing said person will be the best option to bring about a more peaceful, prosperous, and/or high quality of life in said country, if they are. We have a long line of historical events that often show that by killing one of the ‘evil’ persons, you do run the risk of replacing them with someone even more ‘evil’ than the person before them.
People on these corporate boards will clamor for the top position during a power vacuum situation. And so killing a person at the head of ‘all of this’ doesn’t really resolve the issue at hand. I’m a dreamer, and I’m not the only one. I believe that this all boils down to the need for a grassroots movement to replace the people in power in our governments and change the systems that do not or no longer serve the majority of people well enough or at all.

Just this morning, while watching a saved Youtube video on my phone, I had a bad experience that had me really wish there was a solid contender to Youtube as it’s really gone to shit with its user experience. You watch a skipable ad at the beginning that can be skipped after 5 seconds. It’s for a major jewelry store chain. I’m a dude who doesn’t own nor care to own a watch, necklace, etc. anytime soon. I’m also not seeing anyone. Haven’t mentioned online or in text of marriage or the like. So why am I seeing an ad for this?? Tap the tiny info icon near the number of ads, to see why this ad was targeted at me. “Age group.” FFS.
Skip ad and start into video about space and what’s beyond our solar system. Two minutes or so in, pop out ad appears on my phone screen while the video is still playing. “Gahhh.” Close it. Two minutes later, another broadly targeted ad. “What the heck Why am I seeing a perfume ad?” Skip ad after five seconds. Return to the video that only has about 8 minutes left. Three and a half minutes later, pop out ad. Close ad. Continue watching. Pop out ad shows up. This time, I don’t see an “X” to close it. “Wtf? Why can’t I close it?” Start thinking that I might need to exit fullscreen to see the exit option. Do so, but it’s being finicky. Phone won’t auto rotate now. Try to fix it. Finally get it to work and close the ad that now takes over the comment section and video suggestion just below the video. Close it. “Seriously, someone really needs to become a competitor to Youtube! This shit is outrageous now!”
This seems like the best time to start watching PeerTube videos first, then deal with the hell hole that is Youtube now, if I want to watch more content.

Thanks for the heads up team! o7
