Reddit expat who’s not going back.
I should have been more specific. Yes it’s the Secure Pocket Rocket
Loving the continuous transparency from Framework. Bought one for myself, when my father needed a new laptop got him onto the framework bandwagon. Now my wife has informed me to start budgeting - she wants one next year. Their behaviour to date is why I’m willing to get behind them & their products.
Dual booting Mint & Windows. Working a treat
How performant does it need to be? What’s the nature of the read/write behaviour? If it fits the profile of “fast USB drive” then you could potentially get away with 2 of these (https://frame.work/au/en/products/storage-expansion-card?v=FRACCFBZ02) configured in software raid and boot your OS off the internal nvme. That said, I feel you’d get more mileage with a second hand (and cheap!) micro PC for your paperless instance and save the framework as a laptop
Tasmania
Ahh autocorrect 🤦
Notesnook
Go for the pain tier (even though it’s FOSS) 100% worth it.
WFH > Office cubicle > Open plan chaos
Was a genuine challenge. I ended up purchasing a copy for my whole family so everyone can use it.
Threema
Where Signal is secure - Threema is private and secure (e2e encrypted, uses PFS but doesn’t need your phone number for sign ups. You can be 100% anonymous should you wish)
Started on lemmy.ml, when they were experiencing some performance issues I decided to “be distributed” away from one of the main instances. Decided on one geographically in my home country.
Great recommendation on AnonAddy. I know what I’ll be seeing up tonight.
Have one. My email address is firsname@firstnamesurname.com. I work in tech so it really seems to generate the right impression on my resume.
I remember the fear any time something was greater than 1MB. My first download on any new computer was always a download manager to try and avoid the constant drop-outs and restarts.
Loving the discussion & history here.
I started my online journey on a bleeding edge (and very expensive) 28.8k modem. I still remember the amazing feeling of speed migrating to 33.6k and eventually 56k. We were semi-rural so while the eventual availability of DSL was game changing, our lines were so bad it was less reliable that dial-up. If it rained we had no internet whatsoever.
So glad things have moved on significantly since then.
After leaving Evernote way back when I was in the wilderness for a while. Finally landed on notesnook, haven’t gone back since.
Finding it way easier to engage and comment. Don’t have to wade through thousands of shit comments on Lemmy. Loving it!
Done with Reddit. Lemmy is the way
I went way overboard speccing mine so thenAussie tax was a big hit. Including the RAM & SSDs I sourced separately, over $5K 😭 I find the FW13 is reasonable comparable to similar 13in laptops, but the FW16 is pricier than comparable 16in laptops. Windows ones that is. As I’ve specced it its a total bargain compared to a 16in Macbook. That said, I was willing to eat the price difference for the modularity, the potential for future upgrades & to back Framework’s mission.
Also yes, I’m also desperately waiting for the release of an oculink module.
