  • The problem with that argument is that the world has ALWAYS been a terrible place for the vast majority of people to live, at least since the industrial revolution and arguably since the agricultural revolution. The now vanishing middle class, an artifact of post war economic boom, was about the only time ever it was “morally right” to have a child because chances were very good that they would lead a life of even less suffering than their parents. I chose not to have kids because I agree that the world is headed in a bad direction, but more so because of my financial situation as a working class person, and my mental health as a result of a decade working check to check. If I were in the situation my parents were when I was born, I truly think the equation would work out differently.

  • What’s his issue? Give him something tangential.

Big drinker? Cheapest bottle opener or a nip of his favorite sauce.

Angry asshole? Get him a therapy ball.

The biggest thing my condescending asshole stepdad taught me was “Kill them with kindness”. If you’re kind in a backhanded way, it’ll piss them off and you can feign innocence.

Personally I’d give him a box of dogshit

  • Maybe also schedule with a therapist/counselor for a couple weeks prior, establish a baseline, and have them help you to monitor your mental state while you take the meds.

It seems like you’re very self aware, which is a blessing/curse I believe I share. It’s important to me to keep some outside perspective that will “speak truth to power”. My therapist won’t lie to me, he won’t put up with me lying to myself, and he knows me well enough to spot the bullshit.

If you like, think about it like any other medicine with psychoactive properties. My doctors monitor me for the side effects of antidepressants, mostly for manic episodes. I think it’s a smart aspect of the whole plan.
