That to me was an important feature of reddit :(

What I suspect is that they were getting flooded by bots…

You guessed it. Captcha and Email verification was enabled to stop the influx of bots.

I hate how everyone wants email these days. I bloody hate email in principle. If websites at least had options for Discord or Matrix or Session verification.

If disposable email is a nonstarter, why not create a free account on something like Tutanota that’s just for social media logins? You never need to see it except for password resets and login challenges. If you’re concerned about privacy, use Tor or a VPN to access it.

That’s extra work, throwaway services are often blocked, and it also defeats the purpose of having a backup contact in case of loss passwords etc.

But as I said, I hate email in general and wish there were at least other options to “verify my humanity” or for those other purposes email is used.

Depends on the instance. Discord is starting to mandate the phone number in addition to email.

Isn’t Discord just a chat site? How would you use it for verification?

I’ve never even heard of Matrix or Session verification. Email sounds like a much easier solution IMO.

Discord has bots, so you can send verification links or just confirm the user exists. It’s been done.
