No spoilers for Resurrections please, I’ve only watched the first 3 movies in the last couple of days. Yes, I know that I’m 20 years late to the party.
I think the first movie is great, I hated the long action scenes in the second (Neo vs the Smith army got boring after a couple of minutes, and added no value), and mostly enjoyed the third, even though it didn’t really feel like a Matrix movie.
I’ve read that the fourth is terrible. Is that because it ruined people’s nostalgia, or is it really that bad? I’m probably going to watch it either way, just like to hear your opinions.
I thought it was a hilarious, satirical “screw you” to the studio for forcing them to make another sequel (and a commentary on the general theme of milking old franchises past their prime), and it I loved it for making fun of itself. I laughed through the whole thing.
If you didn’t wait as long as everyone else to see it it’s not going to hit the same. The movie is a parody on its own creation and specifically talks shit about the very people who demanded it be made.
I actually thought the newest matrix was a pretty fun romp. Not the best of the series - but others who shit on it like they do are being too harsh (in my opinion, art being subjective and all). I actually thought the way they came back to the matrix was pretty fun.
To be fair to the other fans who hated this one, I wasn’t super invested in the older movies so some of the other complaints never bothered me too much.
I think Matrix Resurrections is a parody. It’s a funny movie, has a good dose of action. Of course, don’t expect a movie like the first one but you can have a fun time watching it
I liked it as send-off to fans kind of movie with a lot of 4 wall references.
Speaking as a fan of the first 3 movies, Resurrections is just awful. Plot is meh at best, character dialog sounds more like a parody and doesn’t have the gravitas of the previous movies. Some of the returning characters are in such a weird position story-wise it feels like they were just treated as throwaway side characters. Once you watch it, you’ll know exactly who I am talking about.
Action is poorly designed and choreographed. There’s no iconic setpiece on the level of the lobby scene, the dojo, the chateau, or even the battle for Zion.
Overall, it feels like a reboot or remake by someone who doesn’t understand what made the old movies great, which is strange considering how the Wachowski’s were still at the helm. Basically, Resurrections is “The Hobbit” of the Matrix triology. You’re excited for it because it’s done by the same people, you’re starving for more of that world, but it ultimately falls short.
