You keep saying “it doesn’t hurt anyone”. But, I’m wracking my brain trying to figure out who this mod would help? Like, what kind of person is so put out by this that they would seek outside help to have it removed? It’s very difficult to imagine a version of this that doesn’t involve some pretty hurtful stuff.

Nexusmods is very clear that they will not platform mods that promote any sort of hatred. You may say this doesn’t do that, but I think it’s pretty clear that this would do nothing except foster hateful discussion. It’s a harmless disclaimer that can already be disabled without a mod. The only reason to host a mod for this is to promote the idea that it’s wrong and encourage the types of people that think that to do what they always do, be hateful. It’s inevitable, and it breaks Nexusmods ToS pretty obviously.

On the topic of making them “look weak”: I think it’s very clear that if you’re the type of person that wants this content, then they do not care about your opinion and do not want you to use their platform.

I didn’t have to wrack my brain to know it helps the lazy bums who don’t know or don’t want to do anything themselves.
While I’m out of the loop with the current state of affairs, in the early days there were plenty of comments from people who didn’t know what WinRAR or even an archive was. Couldn’t even install the most basic of mods without a video tutorial. Couldn’t even ask for help properly. “Help! The dumb mods not working!!!”

It was as hilarious as it was tragic.

Oh no! Racist apologists can’t pretend that other people are as hateful as themselves!

They get grumpy whenever someone leaves evidence that they might be the bad guys laying around!

Fuck that mod. Fuck who made it. Fuck anyone who cares about it getting deleted.

I don’t even know what the original content was, but if the developers felt the need to point out that they made a mistake, they must feel pretty strongly about it. From what I understand, clearing the disclaimer changes nothing in the game, it’s just one less splash screen when you start it up.

It pretty much boils down to:

Developer: Hey guys, that thing we did back then was not cool, so rather than pretend it never happened, or block access to the game, we put a little message in just to let people know that we aren’t as racist as we used to be and we’re sorry.

Racists: We are just as racist as we’ve always been and your apology implies that racism is wrong. Which implies that WE are wrong, and we don’t like to be wrong.

Been more than a minute, but I assume it was mostly racist depictions of indigenous peoples?

But yeah. The bigots always lose their god damned minds over anyone acknowledging mistakes or apologizing. Was it last year that Ian Jomha/idubz took down a lot of his earlier REALLY racist videos and apologized? And the entire internet showed their asses (even Charlie/Moistcritical/Normie Centrist Jesus lost his god damned mind and insisted nobody should ever apologize for saying bad shit if it is was funny).

Likely because it ruins the idea of “The evil liberals are out to ruin your life over one mistake you made forty years ago. And that is why it is okay to call people the n-word”.

Good, you have to be a special kind of disgusting person to make a mod like that or the one that removed the pride flag from spiderman. You are not entitled to have your stupid mods in a platform if that platform does not want to have that kind of content, they are free to upload it somewhere else which makes their crying on twitter an extra layer of cringe showing how manchild are.

Im glad the devs added the disclaimer, its a small thing but it shows some sensibilities.

As someone who never played it growing up, hows the remaster handle? Is it still a product of its time in regards to janky PS/N64 era platforming or have the controls and camera been updated as well the obvious graphics improvements?

They redid the controls, camera and graphics. But you can go back to classic controls/graphics in the menu.

If there is already a launch command to skip the disclaimer (as said in the Twitter thread you linked) then that mod literally only existed as a soapbox for the person that uploaded it to whine about how CD said the games have offensive depictions of people while a better method to hide it already shipped with the game.

Lmao, it doesn’t make them look weak. It makes them look strong – standing up against subtle bigotry and dogwhistles despite potential backlash?

                I’d say that’s strong.

Someone trying to make a mod (that reproduces built-in functionality) to use as a platform to essentially promote racism? That’s incredibly weak. It screams “I can’t handle people or companies being more socially aware than me”.

And then whining about it on social media? That’s also weak. Host it yourself (not you specifically) if making that mod is so important to you.

But punching down is never “strong”. It’s always weak. That mod is punching down. Making that mod is punching down. Wanting or using that mod is punching down. Weak.

I mean, NexusMods is hosting mods that let you fuck big titted Argonian maids. These devs can’t get it through their heads that big titted Argonian maids are a misrepresentation of the entire Argonian race, because as lizards, Argonians don’t even have mammaries. And that’s hurtful.

It’s possible to enjoy problematic media for parts of it that aren’t problematic while still acknowledging there are issues with what you’re enjoying. Especially for things made in the past, where societal standards weren’t the same as they are now.

I think this is especially true for video games, which have both story/visuals and game play. I could sympathize if someone found the game play of an older game very compelling even in the face of problematic story/visuals. Likewise, I can understand someone not enjoying a game specifically because they find it’s story/visuals offensive.

At the end of the day, as long as you can understand that a part of older media would be found as offensive to people today, understand why those parts are offensive, and know that those parts aren’t ok for modern media, then you’re good.

On the flip side, if you specifically, unironically enjoy these games for those parts, then yeah, you’re probably racist.

Edit: and in respect to your other posts here, I’ll add this: my understanding is that the mod was specifically targeting only that disclaimer, which means the mod maker specifically disagreed with the disclaimer. That is what makes it racist. If it skipped all intros in the game (which it sounds like it didn’t), or if the game didn’t have a built in option to turn that disclaimer off (which it sounds like it does) then people wouldn’t have as much of an issue with the mod.

or they don’t see it has problematic. Due to do a reason who haves nothing with race.

if the game didn’t have a built in option to turn that disclaimer off (which it sounds like it does)

Your right and wrong about this. It’s not a in game option. It’s a out of game option. If that Steam user never found it. We will not know about it.
