$44m over their term is about 15 houses per year. Considering they plan to bring in 400,000 new migrants per year, I’m not sure defunding women’s sports to build 15 houses is really going to make much of a dent in the housing market.

Good. The federal government shouldn’t be funding sports, especially women’s soccer which provides less than zero return on investment. 99% of the people caught up in Matilda fever won’t watch another game or go to another game unless we get another World Cup.

This tournament alone has already generated hundreds of millions of dollars for the economy. Not to mention the outright positive social, mental and physical health ramifications of football inspiring a whole generation of kids to play sport.

You could not be more wrong.

We don’t have a world cup hosted here every year though, so that’s besides the point.

Soccer clubs already exist. Hell I played soccer for 10 years myself socially. Why does the federal government need to fund anything when it already exists?

You could not be more wrong.

Almost all of the womens sports leagues run at a loss and are propped up by the mens leagues. FIFA themselves said at their estimates this entire world cup will break even at best.

Encourage young footballers and ship them off early to Europe to play (preferably England so they’re guaranteed English language skills). But many go into international skills in non english speaking countries and you can’t tell the difference.

And then hope they play for Australia. There’s no way we’ll ever match them in investment so might as well leverage their resources to train our players.
