I have a few different variations depending one what mode or antenna I want to try.

Usually though:

  • IC-705
  • Endfedz 10/20/40 Trail Friendly
  • paddle or mic
  • 20’ collapsible mast
  • log book (rite in the rain)
  • in-ear headphones

Of course a water dish and treats if my dog, Nora, is traveling with me.

I’ll keep all of that in a Maxpedition 12-Inch X 5-Inch Bottle Holder

Backpack if I’m able to really minimize is the Nathan Trail 12-liter

There’s a few extras in the pic that I may bring, like a coffee thermos for short hikes on cold days, YAKTRAX spikes in case it’s icey, and a headlamp.

What do you SOTA with?

I haven’t tried SOTA yet but I really want to get into it. If you’re bringing the pack, does the water bottle holder go into the pack with the gear in it, or is it carried separately or attached to the outside of the pack?

It goes in the pack. I like to pack stuff in the bottle holder because it provides some cushion/protection.

Also reminds me the pack holds a 2L water camel bag inside as well

My gear load really depends on the hike.

Short easy hike? I’ll bring the KX3 and amplifier. Long hike? Just the MTR3B and lightweight antenna. Crowded or densely wooded summit? I’ll bring an antenna with a small footprint. Having options is nice.

And of course all the jackets, water, food, and other stuff one needs to be safe in the woods.
